May Meeting- Jillily Studio Needle Arts

Jill Finley was our quest speaker for our May Meeting.  You can learn more about her here. She is the owner of Jillily Studio Needle Arts.  She designs quilts and fabric and has a line of notions too.  She created Appli-glue, a product that is acid free and very helpful for those who love to applique.  You can learn more about Appli-glue here.

Lauren introducing our wonderful speaker.
These are some of Jill's patterns that she has created.
Some have been featured in quilting magazines.

The latest fabrics designed by Jill for Henry Glass & Co. You can read more about it here.
Jill was most excited to share items from her annual family quilt retreat that started 10 years ago.  According to Jill, "No matter where we live, we get together every April for one mad weekend of quilting, chocolate, and very little sleep."  All women in the family 18 years old and older are invited. Jill's presentation was very touching and it was clear that quilting is much more than a hobby for her.  It brings her family together in meaningful ways.
Jill's  niece, April Price wrote:
"Yes we are women who quilt! And our daughters will be women who quilt.   My husband always says, "I don't know why you cut all that fabric apart to sew it all back together again."  Well, to make something beautiful.  And really that is how motherhood is: building something one little piece at a time--laying the foundation of a great work.  My life is just scraps--nothing of worth to anyone outside of it looking in-- and yet, through my careful work, it may turn into something beautiful.  And all of these women in my life will have contributed to it--- just like my quilts."

Thanks, Jill for sharing your talents and ideas.  What a touching and inspiring meeting!

May Show and Tell

Once again we had some amazing quilts shown by our very own amazing quilters!

“Garden Maze” by Jacqueline Thompson – Jacque started this stunning quilt in 1996.  Dimensional appliqué blocks set together with a garden maze.  She said it just got bigger and bigger, now it’s a giant king sized.  It is totally hand quilted and she is finally finished after 13 years – Yah!

“Turning 20 Around the Block” by Lela Aston – This beautiful quilt is all red and white with the focus blocks embroidered in Redwork ABCs.  It is queen sized and Lela quilted it all by herself on her sewing machine!

“Friendship Star” by Jean Jackson – This darling baby quilt was made with scraps out of the scrap bag – wow; I don’t think I have those scraps in my scrap bag!

“Sampler Quilt” by Jean Jackson – Jean cleverly combined 2 different “block of the months” to make this great quilt!  It is made in reproduction fabrics from the 1800’s.  The muted colors are cool and she found a wonderful stripe to tie it all together – she says it’s a “crazy reproduction quilt”.

“A Year at a Glance” by Shirley Griffiths – This lovely quilt was the UVQG block of the month in 2005.  It is all hand appliquéd in blanket stitch, which Shirley shared, takes a looong time!  She completed it last year and it was machine quilted by Virginia Gore.  It took her so long because she couldn’t figure out the border, plus she burned a hole in one of the block with her iron! She did a great job repairing it – way to be persistent, Shirley!

“Paddington Bear’s Miracle” by Paulette Patterson – This sweet quilt has cute little Paddington Bears on the front and the back.  It is made with bright colors – red, blue, yellow, green and orange.  Paulette’s daughter has been married for 9 years and has never been able to have children.  Three years ago they started the adoption process and will be adopting a baby boy in July.  Paddington Bear is very popular in England, like Winnie the Pooh is here in theU.S.  Her daughter served her mission in England and Paulette has been saving this fabric for 11 years!

“Fruit of the Vine” by Helen Butler – Another gorgeous whole-cloth quilt by Helen! This beautiful, white quilt is made from 100% cotton sateen fabric. Wow!

“Peacock Feathers” by Helen Butler – This small green quilt is made from some beautiful green Dupioni silk that Helen had leftover from her daughters gown for the Jr. Miss Pageant. She didn’t want to throw it away, so she made this neat little quilt with blue and gold metallic thread.

“Chain of Love” by Lorri Overson – This pretty quilt is in pastels with a white background.  Lorri has been machine quilting for 7 years, she finished this quilt to exhibit in the Home Machine Quilting Show.  Each feather design is unique!

“Alexander’s Race Car Quilt” by Suzzanne Cutler – Suzzanne made this darling quilt for her four year old son, Alexander.  It is similar to a block of the month, but she made it up herself.  There are blues, yellows, reds and green with prairie points too. There is a racetrack with handquilted cars on it and a grandstand! The clever blocks have 3D pockets in them, so her son can park his cars in them overnight.

“Woolie Flowers” by Deonne Stott – This beautiful wall hanging is made from an Amy McClellan pattern.  It has wool flowers and prairie points.  Deonne does her own quilting and she got 3rd place at the Home Machine Quilting Show in the wall hanging category!  Go Deonne!

April Quilter's Forum

Bonnie Miles and Wendy Liddle provided a wonderful Quilter's Forum in April where we learned more about leaders and enders, received handouts for "short cut" patterns, and talked about quilting with circles and circle-like patterns.  Thank you Bonnie and Wendy for your preparation and willingness to share.

Bonnie made several of these drawstring pouches and gave them away and showed us all how to make one for ourselves.  Quilter's Forum is so fun!

April Hospitality Table

PJ Medeiros provided a beautiful hospitality table in April.
Her amazing basket and flower quilts made it feel like spring
even though outside snow was accumulating significantly.
