April Block of the Month

Below are examples of April's block of the month, Courthouse Steps.
In the finished quilt they may be in a row.
The last picture is Liz's creation with her bonus block.  I love the frame and appliqued flower.

April Show and Tell

“Spooky” by Mary Jo Roberts – Mary Jo Made this darling Halloween Quilt from a pattern she got “on the cheap”, she enjoys fall colors.  She actually had this one in to the quilter the day before Halloween – 2008!
“The Mill Girls” by Mary Jo Roberts – This gorgeous quilt in 30’s fabrics was made from a book by Jennifer Chiaverini.  It has a beautiful yellow border that complements the quilt perfectly.  This is the 2nd of Mary Jo’s quilts that she started and finished in the same year.  Way to go, Mary Jo!
“Movie Quilt” by Madison Ballif – This great quilt is Madison’s first one – she is 15 years old. She made this quilt AND quilted it herself! It is made with fun, colored, food prints – great job, Madison!
“Hunter Star” by Ronda Shaw – This stunning two color quilt was made from a class she took at the Bryce Canyon Retreat last year. (Taught by Mary Lou Blazer).  It was quilted by Monique Hudson.  Even the back is cute – made with lots of green scraps.

“Lost Socks” by Ronda Shaw – This fun Christmas Quilt was made at a Fish Lake Retreat with a group fromRichfield.  This is a darling quilt with lots of multi-colored, multi-sized socks. It was also quilted by Monique Hudson.

“Row Quilt” by Judy Monson – Finishing this fun, scrappy row quilt was Judy’s #1 New Years’ Resolution!  It is darling with little houses, scrappy stars and more!

“Scrappy Bull’s Eye by Judy Monson – This quilt is stunning, with it’s many “bull’s eye” blocks, and the border is great too – very clever!  She Hand quilted (with “Big Stitches”) herself!  She is glad to have another finished project, but she still has lots of scraps left!
“Movie Night” by Vonda Proctor – This fun quilt is made with a collection of novelty “movie treats” fabrics.  Her daughter nick-named this quilt “The Biggest Loser quilt”.  Cute candy fabric on the back too – and she quilted it herself on her machine!

“Piece of Americana” by Vonda Proctor – This is a “Piece o’ Cake” pattern that she hand appliquéd in only 3 months!!! Amazing – it is beautiful and intricate – way to go, Vonda!

“Love Multiplies” by Kathy Porter – This is a black and white representation of a mother loving many children.  Love doesn’t divide between your children – it multiplies, so the more you have, the more love you have!  This quilt was made from Kathy’s original art – she loves to doodle – even at church!
“In the Beginning” by Kathy Porter – This was Kathy’s first doodle quilt.  It is a stunning quilt made with Batiks on a black background.  Quilted by Kimberwood Quilting, then Kathy added 1,000 Swarovski crystals!  She scalloped the borders with a beautiful, bright green – wow!
“Twisted Pinwheels” by Debbie Robertson – Debbie made this quilt because she “needed something new for the bed”.  Wow – it’s beautiful – scrappy quilted pinwheels, set with green and red triangles.  It is a queen size.  She got the pattern from Fons and Porter’s Magazine (May/June 2008).  Great job, Debbie!
“Bramble Bush” by Vicki Heal – Vicki had a big learning curve with this one.  She did the machine quilting herself and used “invisible thread” and had lots of trouble with the tension – she learned the hard way!  It is a darling quilt with lots of tiny squares, making a great pattern!
“Mystery Quilt” by Barb Murdock – This is a mystery quilt that Barb made from a retreat she attended 2 years ago.  On her list “to finish this year”.  It is a beautiful quilt with an intricate design – way to go, Barb!
“Annabel’s Flowers” by Dee DeHart – This beautiful quilt, is made with 2 charm packs and 2 yards of white.  Deesaid it was very easy; she left the flowers raw-edged to make it super easy.  It’s for her nephew’s new daughter. It doesn’t look easy – it’s gorgeous!

Utah Valley Quilt Guild Local Quilt Market

Our April meeting featured local women who have turned their passion for quilting into a business.  They each took a few minutes to explain their business, how they got started and give some advice.  Many brought door prizes. Here they are seated on the stage.  Below, they are each shown in their booth where they displayed and sold their products.
Click on the links to find websites and blogs from our presenters.
This was such a fun and inspiring meeting!

March Show and Tell

Our guild is full of amazing quilters!

“A Sampling of Santas” by Betty Johns –Betty showed this fun “Piece o’ Cake” designed quilt with lots of darling Santa blocks – so cute!

“Turning 20” by Lela Aston – This quilt is no simple “Turning 20” quilt; Lela has machine-embroidered darling Dalmatians on the large squares!  This is a square quilt, so she made the Dalmatians turn different ways, so there is no “wrong way” to lay or hold the quilt – smart idea!

“Sunny Days” by PJ Madeiros – PJ is still working on this darling yellow quilt with appliquéd flowers.  This is a wonderful “Piece ‘O Cake” design – so bright and cheerful!

“Father’s Memory Quilt”, “Quik Quilts’ Block of the Month”, “Quilting Cottage’s Block of the Month” & “Stack & Whack” by Ruth Caye – Ruth has done a great job, bringing 4 quilts to show this month! They are all so great, and showcase lots of different styles and fabric choices – way to go Ruth!

“Kaleidoscope Snowflake”, “William’s Modified Exquisite” & “William’s Leftovers” by Margaret Gray – Margaret used her ‘EQ6’ & Kaleidoscope software for this fabulous paper-pieced quilt. Her snowflakes really stand out on the rich blue background. (Quilted by Joann Peterson of Sweetbriar in Salem). She used 2 jelly rolls for the “modified” quilt, using bright colors for the star points, as William (her son), is studying Astrophysics. The “leftovers” quilt looks wonderful with its deep colored border and bright golds.

“From the North Pole” by Dolores Despain – Another fun “Piece o’ Cake” design.  This darling table runner was a Christmas gift from Dolores’ daughter, Lisa.

“Cracker Barrel”, plus 2 baby quilts with a matching pillow by Sylvia Phillips – Sylvia showed us a darling “cowboy” quilt, complete with “lasso” details, very clever! Her other baby quilt, “Taggert”, featured her grandson’s name across it.  Her large “Cracker Barrel” quilt top was great with its muted color scheme.

"Red, White & Blue Scrappy" by Karen Burt-Karen made this beautiful quilt with a pattern from "Women of Grace and Charm", it is a patriotic quilt with a wonderful, scrappy design.

“Grandma’s Aprons” by Gloria Hartley – This beautiful quilt was started at the Aspen Grove Retreat a few years ago.  People told her that the pattern looked like 4-patches with the corners cut off, so for the back, she made giant (15”) 4-patches, and cut off the corners. Great job!

“Christmas Trees” by Karlene Riggs – Another fabulous “Piece o’ Cake” design – these darling, appliquéd Christmas trees are surrounded by a cute “string of lights” border, also appliquéd.  Wonderful!

“30’s gone 50’s” shown by Judie Oler – This quilt was a group effort from the KNOTTs Bee. The cute aprons are appliquéd in 30’s fabrics, and then Judie put on a darling scalloped border.  Hand quilted by the Colonial House and KNOTTs members. (A donation quilt for the Deseret Foundation).

Judy Fitzgerald made this beautiful “Piece o’ Cake” quilt with her Alpine sewing group.  All of the members made one – a great project to do with friends!  The bright yellow background sets off the fun flowers to perfection!

“Whole Cloth Table Runner” & “Twinkle” by Helen Butler – Helen will be teaching this gorgeous table runner with lacy loops at the Utah Quilt Guild’s Quilt Festival this year.  A beautiful piece of lace was her inspiration.  She machine quilted the intricate design on her domestic machine.  Helen also showed her “Piece o’ Cake” designed “Twinkle” quilt with its fabulous color - it just pops right off the quilt! (Linda Jenkins said she like Helen’s borders better than the one in her book!)

“Yo-Yo Rabbit Table Runner” by Ella Simons – Our wonderful president, Ella, showed this charming table runner she recently completed.  All of the yo-yos are just darling!

“Tropical Blossoms” & “Stars in the Garden” by Blyth Larrabee – Both of these quilts are “Piece o’ Cake” designs. Blyth did our Hospitality table, showcasing her beautiful quilts, using our national teacher’s designs – wonderful!

Thanks for sharing your quilts and talents and for bringing your “Piece o’ Cake” designed quilts to make our National Teacher feel welcome!
