November Show and Tell

Bonnie Miles displayed wool quilts, as the theme of our meeting was ‘working with wool’.  “Star of the Desert” was made from recycled woolens obtained from Deseret Industries.  

  “Fitzgerald’s Trail” is a ‘snails trail’ pattern made from wool plaids in honor of her Scottish heritage.

Machelle Preston showed a “Lone Star” quilt that she made at Cherry Tree Cottage.  This quilt features colors that her husband loves—rust, blue, and maize. 

Saundra Cindrich completed two quilts.  The “Basket Quilt” was made using Kaffe Fassett fabrics in rich colors. 

“Parcheesi” is a black and white quilt with brights for pizzazz!  She will be teaching these at the Bryce Canyon retreat.

 Barb Murdock brought two flannel quilts made from charm squares.  One was done in a peach/green/cream combination...

 and the other quilt was mulberry and maize.

Linda Roskelley completed a “Christmas” quilt for her granddaughter for Christmas.  It is made from a Nancy Halverson pattern and panel.

Vonda Proctor showed two quilts.  “Lone Star” is made with rusts and greens.  The star is surrounded by beautiful appliqué.

 “Turn Your Heart” is a family history quilt done in tan and rose.  This quilt was displayed in the Winter Quarters Trail Visitors Center while her daughter was serving a mission there.

Merlene Crapo made a “Tool Quilt” for her husband’s 70^th birthday!  She used a panel and added appliqué.  The back of the quilt is a variety of ‘tool’ themed fabrics.  He is a wood turner, so the quilt is very ‘fitting’! 

Michelle Hansen displayed “Great Grandma’s Dash”.  The blocks were made by her great grandma.  One of the blocks was made by hand, the rest by machine.  None of them were the same size, and all were from recycled fabrics or scraps.  Michelle challenged herself to square them up and set them in a lovely quilt which she will give to her Dad.

Kathleen Baer kept with the ‘wool theme’ by showing a beautiful, bright basket of wool roving hand dyed with Kool Aid.  I’m sure she will find many uses for this in her art quilts!

Laurel Christensen completed “Zinnias”, a Kim Diehl pattern that she made at the Park City retreat.  Colored ‘tongues’ in the border are striking!   Way to get a quilt done fast!

Quilts of Valor

On this December 7th as we remember Pearl Harbor 70 years ago I wanted to post the following by Konda Lukau . She posted this on her blog (moosequilts.blogspot.com)after she went with other members of Utah Valley Quilt Guild to deliver Quilts of Valor to Soldiers serving in an Army National Guard Unit:

Before the crack of dawn, I was heading an hour north with 7 other ladies to deliver some Quilts of Valor.

Quilts of Valor is a national organization.  A few of us here in Utah have been working with the organization for many years.  We have finally been able to get the ball rolling and a lot of quilter's in the area have made quilts.  Because of this, we really wanted to distribute the quilts locally.  Another quilter, Brandy, knows a lot of these soldiers and was able to make this delivery possible.  We went to a Army National Guard Unit that returned a couple months ago from being deployed in Afghanistan.  Those who we gave quilts to today are getting or have received purple hearts.  We were suppose to deliver 25 quilts.  Somehow we had 31 quilts.  Of course, they all got delivered.

Here are the ladies getting ready to hand out QOVs.  Diane Jaeger, the Utah Quilt of Valor rep is telling the soldiers about the organization and that we made these quilts by hand just for them.  I am not in the group.  I am taking pictures.

This unit now has around 90 soldiers in it.  While we were there,  Brandy and Diane promised these soldiers that all of them would get a quilt!

November Forum-Marianne Michaels

For Quilter's Forum this month Marianne Michaels from Corn Wagon Quilt Co.  (cornwagonquilts.com) taught us how to make beautiful wool flowers made from old sweaters.  These flowers can be worn on hats and clothing or on headbands or hair clips.  They are so fun to make!

November Hospitality Table- Marian Gallian

 Marian Gallian provided a happy holiday hospitality table for us at our November Meeting. Thank you, Marian, for sharing your beautiful quilts and helping us all get in the Christmas spirit!

Welcome

Welcome to the new home of the Utah Valley Quilt Guild, the Lindon Community Center.

 Here is a picture of the first group in attendance at the new facility on November 16th, 2011.  

 Francine (President) and Laurel (President-Elect) made the transition seamless (pun intended).

Goodbye and Thank you to the Eldred Center

October was Utah Valley Quilt Guild's last meeting at the Eldred Center. This building will be demolished soon and replaced by the new Community Recreation Center in Provo.  We gifted the Eldred Center a beautiful quilt made by Karlene Riggs as a thank you for letting us use the facilities... 

and thanked the wonderful custodians who help us each month with a gift card.

Future meetings of the Utah Valley Quilt Guild will be held at the Lindon Community Center at 45 North Main Street, Lindon, Utah.

October Show and Tell

Here are the October Show and Tell Quilts.

Gloria Hartley showed a darling quilt called “At Home” done in pink and brown fabrics by Riley Blake. The pattern is by Pink Hippo. 

She also completed “Moose” in brown, green, orange, and gold.

  

Paulette Winsor displayed “Grandma Treats”, a Halloween quilt in green, orange, and blacks with ‘floating’ ghosts!

 Debbie Parker completed a BOM quilt called “Never Enough Pumpkins”; pattern and machine quilting by Rebecca Morganson.

 Evelyn Chugg showed “Grandmothers Flower Garden”, a tablecloth hand-pieced using English paper piecing.  Evelyn also did the hand quilting.  Amazing!

 Cheryl Pfeifer made a “Halloween Quilt” with purple sashing, quilted by Virginia Gore.

 Marlene Crapo finished the “1999 UVQG BOM Row Quilt”.  It looks amazing!

 She also completed a “Sampler Within a Sampler”  that contains six counted cross-stitch blocks in a unique setting.

 Bonnie Miles showed two quilts.  “I Spy a Rainbow” is and ‘I Spy’ quilt on the front, with a large, bright, zigzagged rainbow on the back that really pops on a white background! 

   

She also made a yellow/black/white quilt called “Diamonds”.  It is a modified Jilllily Studio pattern that has large diamonds with black dots on the intersections.

 Ann Lewis has finished 17 quilts in three months.  

She showed us four of them.  “Sturbridge Crossing” is a civil war quilt made with fabric by the same name.  The pattern used is Anita’s Arrowhead. 

 "Flying Carpet” is a nine patch variation

Merry-Go-Round pattern by Sandy Klop. It is done in Aunt Gracie’s fabrics.

 “Mountain Top” is a Miss Rosies pattern with tons of half square triangles.

Susan Proctor displayed two carseat covers and a “Christmas Tree Skirt “.  The skirt is made from gold fabric with a strip bias and ricrac to join the holly trim. 

“Goin’ Truckin” carseat cover has a brown background with the backing and trucks from different fabrics.  Susan designed this especially because the Daddy drives truck.  

 “Goin’ Flying” carseat cover has a background that is dark blue with little white dots like clouds. The propellers are yellow on the helicopters.  This baby’s Daddy is a pilot.

 Sylvia Kent presented “Herd from Farm to Fair”, an original design for the Utah State Fair Quilt Challenge.  The fabric was farm animal faces; the theme was ‘Animal Party’, and the size was to be 24” x 36” or smaller.  She made a pieced, embroidered, and appliquéd row quilt showing animals in different parts of the fair.  Her quilt won 1^st place in Best Original Design and Best of Show overall!  Way to go!! 

Sylvia also presented “Fruit of the Spirit”, an adaptation of Words to the Wise in BH&G Quilt Sampler, Spring/Summer, 2007.  This quilt is done in reds, greens, and golds with pieced squares, and wool and cotton appliqué similar to Pennsylvania Dutch samplers.

Machelle Preston presented a “Quilt of Valor, 2011”.  Of course, it is red/white/blue and has a lovely blue toile in the border.

Wanda Sump showed three quilts.  She made a “Halloween Quilt” out of fun Halloween colors that is all appliquéd except for the candy corn, which she cut with her cricut!  She did all the blanket stitching while attending education week!

Wanda also made a “Halloween Wallhanging” out of the ‘leftovers’ from the quilt.  

 Her “Floral Applique Quilt” was cut from a jelly roll.  It has needle-turned appliqué in spring colors.  Wanda incorporated the ‘ugly’ jelly roll pieces on the back of the quilt!

 Annie Thayne showed two memory quilts made by her sister’s granddaughter for her parent’s 50^th anniversary.  One has photos of their six children; the other has all the grandchildren’s names incorporated into the quilt.  

 Brenda Sommers displayed “Crab Man” that she made for her son for Christmas (he’s known to be a little crabby at times)!  The Going Costal fabric and the pattern in a medallion design are from Crazy Old Ladies.  The back is yummy, light blue minkee.

 Jacquelyn Thompson presented the “Queen and Her Court”, a beautiful sampler quilt with hand appliqué done in greens, corals, and tans.

She also made “Farm Fresh”  by Buggy Barn out of mostly homespuns with machine appliqué.  Jackie, it is way cuter than in the book!
