We had a fun speaker - our Past President, Francine Berrett. She is always fun and keeps herself busy making lots of amazing quilts!

Francine has won ribbons:

For both her own designs and purchased patterns - although when she does follow a pattern, she usually modifies it a little or a lot!

She is amazing!

Wow!

Whooee - she makes us all need a nap - she is so talented and energetic!

She says her applique is better than her piecing, so she does a lot of applique. This great flower quilt is NOT curve-pieced, but appliqued:

She has not only made lots of quilts, she has multiple children (6) and multiple degrees (2 or 3 - I can't remember), she has lived lots of places, including Hawaii!

I think this one should be named "Now, where is all of my spare time going?"

Hospitality in January

Kathy Porter did the amazing "Hospitality Table" this month, and, although there was not a table in sight - it was visually stunning!

Many of Kathy's quilts are her own original design. She is quite a doodler (especially in church)!

Kathy is an amazing quilter and is so kind to share her talents with the rest of us!

This is my (current) personal favorite "Blue Fish". The beading is amazing! AND the best news is that Kathy will be teaching this technique (quilt collage) at an upcoming forum - so watch your Patchwords for the date!

Helen Butler and Kathy Porter are doing the forums again this year and we are super excited! They did a fantastic job last year and can't wait to see what's coming this year! The theme this year will be "Quilting from A to Z".

January was wonderful, with Ella Simons showing us great hints and tips!

Ella is an amazing, experienced quilter and we all learned lots of things!

There was a good-sized crowd, as usual:

November Meeting- Marianne Michaels

These pictures are from the Wool Trunk show by Marianne Michaels in November. She has made so many beautiful quilts from wool (much of it is repurposed from wool clothing). Enjoy!

November Show and Tell

Bonnie Miles displayed wool quilts, as the theme of our meeting was ‘working with wool’. “Star of the Desert” was made from recycled woolens obtained from Deseret Industries.

“Fitzgerald’s Trail” is a ‘snails trail’ pattern made from wool plaids in honor of her Scottish heritage.

Machelle Preston showed a “Lone Star” quilt that she made at Cherry Tree Cottage. This quilt features colors that her husband loves—rust, blue, and maize.

Saundra Cindrich completed two quilts. The “Basket Quilt” was made using Kaffe Fassett fabrics in rich colors.

“Parcheesi” is a black and white quilt with brights for pizzazz! She will be teaching these at the Bryce Canyon retreat.

Barb Murdock brought two flannel quilts made from charm squares. One was done in a peach/green/cream combination...

and the other quilt was mulberry and maize.

Linda Roskelley completed a “Christmas” quilt for her granddaughter for Christmas. It is made from a Nancy Halverson pattern and panel.

Vonda Proctor showed two quilts. “Lone Star” is made with rusts and greens. The star is surrounded by beautiful appliqué.

“Turn Your Heart” is a family history quilt done in tan and rose. This quilt was displayed in the Winter Quarters Trail Visitors Center while her daughter was serving a mission there.

Merlene Crapo made a “Tool Quilt” for her husband’s 70^th birthday! She used a panel and added appliqué. The back of the quilt is a variety of ‘tool’ themed fabrics. He is a wood turner, so the quilt is very ‘fitting’!

Michelle Hansen displayed “Great Grandma’s Dash”. The blocks were made by her great grandma. One of the blocks was made by hand, the rest by machine. None of them were the same size, and all were from recycled fabrics or scraps. Michelle challenged herself to square them up and set them in a lovely quilt which she will give to her Dad.

Kathleen Baer kept with the ‘wool theme’ by showing a beautiful, bright basket of wool roving hand dyed with Kool Aid. I’m sure she will find many uses for this in her art quilts!

Laurel Christensen completed “Zinnias”, a Kim Diehl pattern that she made at the Park City retreat. Colored ‘tongues’ in the border are striking! Way to get a quilt done fast!

Quilts of Valor

On this December 7th as we remember Pearl Harbor 70 years ago I wanted to post the following by Konda Lukau . She posted this on her blog (moosequilts.blogspot.com)after she went with other members of Utah Valley Quilt Guild to deliver Quilts of Valor to Soldiers serving in an Army National Guard Unit:

Before the crack of dawn, I was heading an hour north with 7 other ladies to deliver some Quilts of Valor.

Quilts of Valor is a national organization. A few of us here in Utah have been working with the organization for many years. We have finally been able to get the ball rolling and a lot of quilter's in the area have made quilts. Because of this, we really wanted to distribute the quilts locally. Another quilter, Brandy, knows a lot of these soldiers and was able to make this delivery possible. We went to a Army National Guard Unit that returned a couple months ago from being deployed in Afghanistan. Those who we gave quilts to today are getting or have received purple hearts. We were suppose to deliver 25 quilts. Somehow we had 31 quilts. Of course, they all got delivered.

Here are the ladies getting ready to hand out QOVs. Diane Jaeger, the Utah Quilt of Valor rep is telling the soldiers about the organization and that we made these quilts by hand just for them. I am not in the group. I am taking pictures.

Diane was showing this soldier this quilt that she quilted for him.

And here are all the soldiers we gave quilts to.

This unit now has around 90 soldiers in it. While we were there, Brandy and Diane promised these soldiers that all of them would get a quilt!

November Forum-Marianne Michaels

For Quilter's Forum this month Marianne Michaels from Corn Wagon Quilt Co. (cornwagonquilts.com) taught us how to make beautiful wool flowers made from old sweaters. These flowers can be worn on hats and clothing or on headbands or hair clips. They are so fun to make!

Goodbye and Thank you to the Eldred Center

October was Utah Valley Quilt Guild's last meeting at the Eldred Center. This building will be demolished soon and replaced by the new Community Recreation Center in Provo. We gifted the Eldred Center a beautiful quilt made by Karlene Riggs as a thank you for letting us use the facilities...

and thanked the wonderful custodians who help us each month with a gift card.

October Show and Tell

Here are the October Show and Tell Quilts.

Gloria Hartley showed a darling quilt called “At Home” done in pink and brown fabrics by Riley Blake. The pattern is by Pink Hippo.

She also completed “Moose” in brown, green, orange, and gold.

Paulette Winsor displayed “Grandma Treats”, a Halloween quilt in green, orange, and blacks with ‘floating’ ghosts!

Debbie Parker completed a BOM quilt called “Never Enough Pumpkins”; pattern and machine quilting by Rebecca Morganson.

Evelyn Chugg showed “Grandmothers Flower Garden”, a tablecloth hand-pieced using English paper piecing. Evelyn also did the hand quilting. Amazing!

Cheryl Pfeifer made a “Halloween Quilt” with purple sashing, quilted by Virginia Gore.

Marlene Crapo finished the “1999 UVQG BOM Row Quilt”. It looks amazing!

She also completed a “Sampler Within a Sampler” that contains six counted cross-stitch blocks in a unique setting.

Bonnie Miles showed two quilts. “I Spy a Rainbow” is and ‘I Spy’ quilt on the front, with a large, bright, zigzagged rainbow on the back that really pops on a white background!

She also made a yellow/black/white quilt called “Diamonds”. It is a modified Jilllily Studio pattern that has large diamonds with black dots on the intersections.

Ann Lewis has finished 17 quilts in three months.

She showed us four of them. “Sturbridge Crossing” is a civil war quilt made with fabric by the same name. The pattern used is Anita’s Arrowhead.

"Flying Carpet” is a nine patch variation

Merry-Go-Round pattern by Sandy Klop. It is done in Aunt Gracie’s fabrics.

“Mountain Top” is a Miss Rosies pattern with tons of half square triangles.

Susan Proctor displayed two carseat covers and a “Christmas Tree Skirt “. The skirt is made from gold fabric with a strip bias and ricrac to join the holly trim.

“Goin’ Truckin” carseat cover has a brown background with the backing and trucks from different fabrics. Susan designed this especially because the Daddy drives truck.

“Goin’ Flying” carseat cover has a background that is dark blue with little white dots like clouds. The propellers are yellow on the helicopters. This baby’s Daddy is a pilot.

Sylvia Kent presented “Herd from Farm to Fair”, an original design for the Utah State Fair Quilt Challenge. The fabric was farm animal faces; the theme was ‘Animal Party’, and the size was to be 24” x 36” or smaller. She made a pieced, embroidered, and appliquéd row quilt showing animals in different parts of the fair. Her quilt won 1^st place in Best Original Design and Best of Show overall! Way to go!!

Sylvia also presented “Fruit of the Spirit”, an adaptation of Words to the Wise in BH&G Quilt Sampler, Spring/Summer, 2007. This quilt is done in reds, greens, and golds with pieced squares, and wool and cotton appliqué similar to Pennsylvania Dutch samplers.

Machelle Preston presented a “Quilt of Valor, 2011”. Of course, it is red/white/blue and has a lovely blue toile in the border.

Wanda Sump showed three quilts. She made a “Halloween Quilt” out of fun Halloween colors that is all appliquéd except for the candy corn, which she cut with her cricut! She did all the blanket stitching while attending education week!

Wanda also made a “Halloween Wallhanging” out of the ‘leftovers’ from the quilt.

Her “Floral Applique Quilt” was cut from a jelly roll. It has needle-turned appliqué in spring colors. Wanda incorporated the ‘ugly’ jelly roll pieces on the back of the quilt!

Annie Thayne showed two memory quilts made by her sister’s granddaughter for her parent’s 50^th anniversary. One has photos of their six children; the other has all the grandchildren’s names incorporated into the quilt.

Brenda Sommers displayed “Crab Man” that she made for her son for Christmas (he’s known to be a little crabby at times)! The Going Costal fabric and the pattern in a medallion design are from Crazy Old Ladies. The back is yummy, light blue minkee.

Jacquelyn Thompson presented the “Queen and Her Court”, a beautiful sampler quilt with hand appliqué done in greens, corals, and tans.

She also made “Farm Fresh” by Buggy Barn out of mostly homespuns with machine appliqué. Jackie, it is way cuter than in the book!

October Meeting-Marcia's Quilt Shop

Marcia Nielsen and a group of quilter's from Richfield presented a wonderful, unique trunk show featuring challenge quilts. Marcia owns and operates "Marcia's Quilt Shop" in Richfield, UT. In the spring her store sponsors a quilt challenge. She gives participants a pre printed panel and they come up with amazing quilts. It is fun to look at these quilts and see how one panel can be made up so differently! This is a talented group of quilters. Not only did they meet the challenge but they created artistic masterpieces!

October Forum-Shirley Olsen

Just a note (pun intended) that Utah Valley Quilt Guild did not have a meeting in September because our membership was enjoying Quilt Fest at the Provo Marriott. Our own Crystal North (see below) was in charge of this wonderful event. It was truly a "Symphony of Colors." I "borrowed" most of these pictures from the Utah Quilt Guild Blog. Thank you! August Meeting-Kathleen Baer and Nancy Leach

August Forum-Laurel Christensen

Laurel Christensen did a very hands on workshop for August Forum on Sun Printing and Hand Dyeing. It was a beautiful August morning spent outside with artistic minds and hands busy creating!

Bonnie Miles displayed a beautiful floral appliqué quilt. The floral appliqué was done in hand-dyed fabrics on a black background. She learned this in a class at a previous Quilt Fest. Striking!

Barb Murdock made a cozy flannel quilt for her sister. She used a small piece of southwestern flannel fabric from her stash, and added other pieces to it. A lot of family members have been receiving wonderful flannel quilts courtesy of Barb!

Marlene Cook showed three fun quilts. Her daughter-in-law had a double lung transplant, and has problems with ants in her home. Marlene made a darling “Antitude” quilt for her with red/white checkboard and ants stealing the picnic. Pattern is by Corey Blunt.

The second quilt is appliqué with bright flowers, “Flower Power” pattern by Peggy Waltman.

1. She also did one of Lori Smith’s BOM patterns in beautiful muted peaches and greens—lovely.

Joseph Barley composed “The Beast” in a high school quilt class. This is an amazing quilt for a first-time quilter. It features a 1970’s muscle car printed onto fabric, with appliquéd planes, and paper pieced stars in the corners. It was machine quilted in black thread, and the outline of the car shows on the lighter colored quilt back. He wants to give special thanks to his Mom for all of her help.

Suzzanne Cutler made a darling Turtle Baby Quilt. It has puffy green and yellow turtles with red and blue snail tails. Bright and fun!

Shirley Olsen quilted “Rachelle’s Scrappy Star Quilt” that was pieced by her daughter, Rachelle, about 11 years ago. This commemorates Rachelle’s graduation from Harvard this year with a PhD in molecular biology. She collected signatures from friends, teachers, and family members for the centers of the stars. She now works for Saint Jude Children’s Hospital in Memphis, TN doing cancer research.

Sue Proctor displayed two quilts. She made a “Bonnet Girl” quilt top in high school, which was quilted by a handicapped lady in Benjamin.

She also composed a brown and blue quilt with flowers that contains words of advice to the bride, with handwritten messages entitled “When You Look At Me.”

Francine Berrett showed three quilts. The first is “Lollipop Flowers”, pattern by Nancy Schultz, done in pink, red, and blue—bright and fun!

She taught a mystery quilt class at Peteet Neet which used a charm pack set on point with appliqué, of course.

She also made a “One Day Quilt” with appliquéd sunflowers against a brick wall—amazing!

No Parking!

Hello Utah Valley Quilt Guild Members!

As you know, the Eldred Center in Provo, will be torn down shortly. Due to the ongoing construction currently taking place around the Eldred Center there is little to NO PARKING! The park parking lot, as well as the Eldred center lot have been demolished or fenced off.

There is very limited parking near the building, both on the street and in the lot. We would ask that this Wednesday, for the forum and guild meeting, that you car pool if at all possible. If you are able bodied please park on the street (a block away possibly) and allow those of our guild members who aren't quite as nimble to park near the building.

June Forum and Meeting-Donna Moyer

Donna Moyer is an amazing quilter. She graciously taught us her method of hand piecing for our forum this month. She says that while Eleanor Burns is famous for her "Quilt in a Day" books, she has mastered the "Moyer Quilt in a Decade" method. JEAN THORNOCK: Two baby quilts

Penguin Pals: Two darling penguins swimming in a sea of blue. Sweet dreams for a child.

Swinging Monkey: Very cute little appliqued swinging monkeys make this charming little quilt for a lucky little guy.

JANICE WALKER: Pine Tree

Janice put this together as her own family tree quilt for a family reunion; a very neat idea. It is a stash quilt in greens. Each tree is different as each family is different. They all come together to make a beautiful whole.

MERLENE CRAPO: Drunkard's Wave

This quilt was done in the Judy Neimeyer class last month; very impressive to finish so soon. Beautiful, done in browns and gold.

MERLENE CRAPO: Heart and Home

This lovely quilt was a class Merlene took in Idaho. Applique made up in a beautiful arrangement of houses. True to it's name.

LAUREL CHRISTENSEN: Island Surprise

Laurel has also impressed everyone by completing her quilt started in the Judy Neimeyer class last month. Beautiful bright colors are really an island surprise.

BONNIE WILKINS: Anniversary Quilt

Bonnie is a visitor to our guild this month. She got this quilt from her grandparents. It had been stored in a garage and had an oil stain on it. Many suggestions were made as to what could be done about the stain. It was a very special family affair quilt, each block was made by one of the sisters.

1. Barb Murdock displayed a pink, white, and yellow Carpenters Star quilt that she made for a granddaughter in Alaska. The color choices looked like a breath of spring.

Barb also made a quilt for her grandson in Alaska for his birthday one year ago. This quilt was her own design and showed off browns and creams in split rectangles and squares.

Erin Davenport made Neapolitan Dream in pinks, browns, and creams (from her mother-in-laws stash). This pattern had blocks of different sized squares set one inside another.

Judy Fitzgerald made Flowers in My Garden. This showcased a red background with vibrant appliquéd flowers. Each block was a different grouping of flowers, and gave us hope that summer will eventually come!

Debbie Parker composed a quilt made from blocks contributed by friends of the Nielsen Family who lost two sons in one year. The quilt will be presented to the family as a memoriam that will be treasured.

1 Karlene Riggs used pinks, yellows, and other fun colors to make Pink Lemonade. She used a pattern by Piece O’ Cake Designs that was in the March/April 2011 For the Love of Quilting magazine. The design was machine appliquéd.

April Meeting -Pamela Morgan, A Little Ball of Fire

Pamela Morgan and her family hosted our April meeting. They own a donut shop in Draper and Salt Lake called Beyond Glaze. The donuts are beautiful and so tasty! The Morgans have a fabulous Tea Party Tradition in their home and she shared a lot of fun ideas quilts and such that they have made and used at these events. The following are pictures from her presentation:

Pamela loves vintage clothing also and shared some pieces she and her daughters have made.

She is also a master of stitchery.

And really anything that is fun and cute!

April Forum- It's A Tea Party!

Antoinette "Nettie" Morgan provided a lovely tea party for all 80 forum goers this month. Nettie is a graduate of the Culinary Art Institute of America. She has worked extensively in the restaurant and catering businesses. She now has her own catering business called Silver Whisk Catering. It was so fun to learn how to put together a tea party from a pro. It was also very interesting to see how this family incorporates quilts into their tea parties.

The Morgans also own a delicious donut shop called Beyond Glaze in Draper and Salt Lake City. When you get to the website click on the "picture" button. They are as delicious as they look!

Pamela, Nettie's mother, introduced her to the group. This family knows how to celebrate!

Francine Berrett displayed a “Honey of a Quilt”.

She took this class from Saundra Cindrich at Bryce Canyon. The pattern was designed by Saundra, and the quilt made by Francine with Aunt Gracie and thirties fabrics for a scrappy look. The quilt is framed by an appliquéd vine border, designed by Francine.

“I Believe in Brothers” was made by Margaret Cooper. She used a Christmas themed panel from the “I Believe” fabrics by Nancy Halverson. The pattern was designed by Becky Morganson. Backed with forest green minkee, the quilt is extra snuggly. Margaret made this quilt in honor of her brothers.

“Melody’s Many Dresses” was also made by Margaret Cooper. This quilt has small appliquéd and embellished dresses on a cream background. A lot of work and a lot of fun went into this quilt for her new granddaughter, Melody. The backing is a paper doll fabric that Margaret liked so much, she bought the entire bolt! Melody got off to a scary start, spending fifteen days in the NICU, but she is doing fine now. Congratulations, Margaret!
